  • Through SAP GUI
  • Through Web browser

It is known as the front-end and put in the user’s laptop solely and not in the application/database servers. Front-end takes the user’s requests to information and application servers.

Application Servers: Application server is built to process business logic. This workload is distributed among multiple application servers. With multiple application servers, the user can get the output more quickly. The application server exists at a remote location as compared to the location of the user’s PC.

Database Server: Database server stores and retrieves data as per SQL queries generated by ABAP and applications. However, Database and Application may exist in the same or different physical locations.

Note: SAP architecture depends on what SAP products you have. For R/3, it is a 3-tiered, having 3 layers named presentation, application and database, while 2-Tier Architecture includes database and presentation layers only.

SAP Installation Step by Step Procedure

  • Download the Installation Guide (service.sap.com)
  • Check the compatibility of OS and DB
  • Download the software
  • Search for the known problems
  • Install the OS related patches/ fix packs etc.
  • Install JRE 1.4.2_12
  • Set the Java environment JAVA_HOME path
  • Set the virtual memory to 20 GB on windows
  • Set the hostname not more than 13 characters
  • Make an entry of the hostname in the Hosts file
  • Ensure the installation ports 21212 and 21213 are kept open
  • Ensure the ports 3200, 3300, 3600, 4700 are kept open (DVEBMGS uses these ports)
  • Dump the software into the system without any spaces in the directories
  • Verify the software using LABLE.ASC
  • Get the Static IP address (192, 172, 10 networks)
  • Ensure the internet connection is available with a valid S-USERID
  • Execute sapinst.exe
  • Select 2004s

  • Provide SID and Inst Directory: We have to apply SAP System ID (SAPSID) as QAS, installation Drive (select the drive in which you want to do the installation) and we will select here the Unicode system (Unicode means it supports almost all the languages. Whereas non-Unicode supports only a few languages.
