The icing on the cake for software developers!

PyScript — Python for the Web Browser

Hello folks,

Today I’m going to share one of my real-time experiences when I was working on a project.

Now, what I’m about to describe is one of the most challenging cases when it comes to databases.

We were using **_[NodeJS](https://www.habilelabs.io/blog/best-practice-for-node-js-folder-structure)_** with Sequelize ORM. The project had a heavy database (approx. 10 -12 GB) in the initial phase, and approx. 70% of the project database data was common for all regions/instances. Even the tables were tightly coupled as lots of relations were present b/w tables.

So, the requirement was to set up multiple instances of the project in different G-cloud Regions/Geolocation. How did we proceed with it?? See below-


## Separate Common Data from Database


Now that you understand the situation, let me tell you how did we deal with it-

We cloned the master database into 2 different Sequelize instances, i.e. master DB and cloned DB, and then refactored all APIs/code conditionally to fetch data from different servers

But what about the table’s associations as I already mentioned tables were tightly coupled, and we are using lots of associations (one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-one, many-to-many)?

When we have a single DB, we can easily use includes (in Sequelize) or use join(in raw query) to fetch data from the child table with the help of a forging key, but when we have 2 different database servers then we can’t use joins b/w 2 different DB server.

What we needed to do was-

- To run multiple queries to fetch data from 2 different DB servers
- To use some extra code to merge both query results
- To send the result back to the web app



After considering all these points, what do you think is the best approach to handle this case? Well, we will discuss here a solution that takes far less effort. Let’s go then-


## Solution


For this scenario, we will use a foreign-data wrapper, PostgreSQL support multiple foreign-data wrappers to connect with remote/external database servers, as we are using PostgreSQL database, so we will use **POSTGRES_FDW** extension provided by PostgreSQL.

**POSTGRES_FDW** extension allows us to connect with remote PostgreSQL server and helps to fetch data from remote tables same as we do with a local server without any extra subquery, you can easily query from remote tables and also apply joins b/w local tables and foreign tables.

## Configurations

To configure POSTGRES_FDW,

CREATE USER MAPPING FOR postgres SERVER fdw_server OPTIONS (user 'postgres', password 'postgres'); IMPORT FOREIGN SCHEMA public FROM SERVER fdw_server INTO public;
```

### Example-


Let’s take an example, we have 1 database containing 2 tables (existing situation)

Now as per our requirement, we need to store common data in 1 DB and the client specifies data in another DB, so we need to create 2 different database servers (master DB server and client DB server)

Now, we need to configure and connect the master database with the child database using postgres_fdw extension.

Now we are done with configurations, you can verify the changes by running this query-

You can also try some other queries to verify connections-

- Query from local table
- Select * from users
- Query from foreign table
- Select * from user_licenses
- apply joins b/w local and remote tables
- Select * from users join “user_licenses” on users.id = user_licenses.user_id


And this was how we were able to deal with this challenge.

## - Listen Well!

Sometimes the person just wants you to hear them out rather than trying to solve the problems.

That’s the most effective way to get along. If you’re respectful of their needs, there might come a day when they actually ask for your opinion.

## - It’s Not About You!


Communication can never be about you or a single entity, it is always a two-way street, and we must remember to respect the other person’s feelings as important as our own.

Sometimes it’s hard to grasp, but we should definitely take care of continuing the give and take process.

To own a perfect communication, there has to be honesty going both ways and a decent understanding of what’s being said. Asking clear questions and letting the opposite person know you’re listening are great ways to boost communication.

## Overview about Redis
Redis- which stands for ‘ Remote Dictionary Server’- is an open source, in-memory data structure store.

It’s a NoSQL or non-relational database, which means, there are no tables, and it does not define relations between data sources.

While it basically stores data in key-value format, it also provides efficient support for string-based key-value data storage, sorted sets, hash tables, and multiple data structures like lists, sets, etc.

## Get Started with Redis
Let’s see how to install Redis on Linux machines, so you can get the best out of it.

Install redis-server by hitting this command:

sudo apt-get install redis-server
```

Enable the server daemon by hitting this command:

```
sudo systemctl enable redis-server
```

Start up the service using the above command:

```
sudo systemctl start redis-server
```

Redis is now installed and running. Type the following command to check the server installation:

The default Redis port is 6379 but some services/applications may prefer to change this.

The basic usage of Redis Client is to issue a command and to check the result. If there’s no error, it returns the result, otherwise returns an error message.

If you want to send an arbitrary command, you can type it as shown in the following example-

/usr/bin/redis-cli -h 127.0.0.1:6379> set n 3 3
```

Here, we are setting n variable is to 3 (integer value). You’ll notice that the value is not in the disk yet, and you won’t see any change on your terminal window.

### Pros-
Redis is one of the most popular key-value store databases. It integrates well with many frameworks, and it’s fast, reliable, and easy to set up and use.

- Feature detection and troubleshooting at the application level.
- It can be configured to support multiple data types and meet particular performance needs: a cache of frequently accessed items; a histogram; transactional records; delay or bounded queues.
- Redis can be used to bolster feature testing during development. For instance, you can use it to store and quickly retrieve the names of all your user roles or build an in-memory analytics engine.
- You might also find Redis useful as a dependency container to hold transient information generated from RDBMS queries that would otherwise cause a round-trip to the server.
- Storing application data in Redis is fast (scales with speed of RAM) and because your data is available in memory, it’s never lost due to a system failure.

### Cons-
However, that is where it’s true strengths end. Its disadvantages may be more important than its advantages for some uses.

#### - Lack of persistence
Redis has no built-in persistence. Therefore, if you are using it in a production environment, you must use some other means to persist the data. A few different storage backend exist, ranging from simple to complex (Redis is usually combined with Memcached or other in-memory data store).

#### - No support for transactions
Redis has no support for transactions either as found with databases such as MySQL, PostgreSQL or Oracle Database (Oracle Database 11g and 10g do support transactions, but they are not fully compatible with Redis).

#### - Tuning Redis
Tuning Redis is not a trivial process, and it’s easy to forget about something important. A lot of the tuning parameters are dependent on your use cases, which aren’t always obvious.

#### - No support for clustering
With no built-in clustering, you’ll have to resort to third party tools or develop your own if you want to scale out Redis across multiple nodes, or even multiple data centers.

Unfortunately, there are no standard interfaces for one application to talk directly with another through Redis. This means that scaling and redundancy must be handled by an external tool (i.e. HAProxy) if an application needs to communicate with another server using Redis as the message broker.

However, despite the mentioned cons of Redis, it’s getting popular everyday due to its obvious and handy features.
